Samsung has just unveiled a revolutionary new technology with the introduction of OLED 2.0. This biometric fingerprint unlocking system is considerably safer and provides a much better user experience. 

Samsung Says Fingerprint Sensor Could Add 2.5x Stronger Security than Current Solutions

According to the story by Giz China, Samsung says that the fingerprint sensor-with its large surface-offers 2.5 billion times stronger security than current solutions and allows the user to unlock their device regardless of the position of their finger. 

Additionally, it can simultaneously recognize up to three fingerprints, reducing the failure rate of 0.002 percent to a mere 0.0000000000008 percent.

Although Samsung has yet to reveal when the technology is expected to drop, further developments may occur. CEO of ISORG guesses that the technology might be available in 2025, per Financial Express.

In the meantime, it is a good idea to consider the technical aspects of current and proposed fingerprint-sensing technologies, bearing in mind that biometric authentication is becoming an integral part of consumers’ personal identification, authorization, and authentication process.

How Optics-Based Authentication Systems Work

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, for instance, allow for a clean and unobstructed view of the fingerprint with the help of high-frequency sound waves, allowing the exact form of the fingerprint to be detected from a short distance. By just touching the display, the user can complete authentication.

On the other hand, optics-based authentication systems use dual-lens cameras and advanced algorithms to read the user’s fingerprint through the glass, which is much more secure as it does not compromise the pattern of the fingerprint. Besides, using dual-lens and infrared cameras means it will not get blocked by dust, oil, sweat, or other contaminants.

Finally, users can also opt for capacitive-type fingerprint sensors. By using two plates-one with a reference voltage and one that detects and measures fluctuations-the sensor can analyze the pattern of ridges and valleys.
